What is the scope of a quantity surveyor?

As a quantity surveyor, you will be managing all the costs of a building and civil engineering projects, from the initial calculations to the final figures. Working either for the client or the contractor, in an office, or on-site, you will be involved from the start till its final execution.

Your main goal is to minimize the project cost and enhance value for money while achieving the standard and quality. This includes ensuring statutory building regulations are met. You will have to prepare cost estimates and even though the project is in progress, you will keep an eye on any variations to the contract that may affect costs and create reports to show profitability.

Quantity Surveyor Role

·         They analyze the drawing and specifications of the infrastructure that engineers or architects provide before the commencement of the construction project.

·         The professionals calculate the quantity of the material used in the building. Moreover, they must calculate the actual work or labour cost.

·         Quantity surveying relies on technical measurement tools for an accurate cost estimate.

·         Perform risk, value management and cost control.

·         Advise on a procurement strategy.

·         Identify, analyze and develop responses to commercial risks.

·         Prepare and analyze costing for tenders

·         Allocate work to subcontractors.

·         Provide advice on contractual claims

·         Analyze outcomes and make detailed progress reports

·         Maintain awareness of construction projects contracts in current use

·         Valuate final work and arrangements of payments

·         Understand the implications of health and safety regulations.

·         Offer advice on property taxation

·         Provide post-occupancy advice, facilities management services, and life cycle costing advice

·         Assist clients in locating and accessing additional and alternative sources of funding
