APC

Once you have completed an accredited degree the next step is to get a job. To become a member of RICS (MRICS) you must complete your Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) which involves completing a period of structured training with an employer.

You can enrol at any time in your career, but you must meet one of the eligibilities before applying for assessment:

                     Relevant experience and an RICS-accredited degree

                     5 years of relevant experience and any bachelor’s degree

                     10 years of relevant experience operating at an advanced level by seniority, specialization, or academia.

The most common way for qualifying as a chartered member is APC, but you can also qualify as a senior professional, industry specialist, or academia.

The APC is the practical training and experience that, when combined with academic qualifications, leads to membership (MRICS) and the status of a chartered surveyor.

APC Competence

The APC can be completed with or without structured training depending on your experience.

                     Structured training – Acquire skills 1-2 years of structured training before assessment.

                     Preliminary review – With 5 years of experience, you can go to the final assessment following a review of your submissions.

The APC competence ensures that candidates are competent and meet the highest standards of professionalism required to become a chartered surveyor.

Senior Professionals, Specialists & Academics

If your career has progressed based on seniority, specialism or through academia, there are assessments routes to match your experience

                     Senior professional Assessment – You have 10 years of relevant experience (5 years if you have a postgraduate degree) and can demonstrate advanced responsibilities as a senior leader. You have experience as a leader and manager.

                     Specialist Assessment – You have 10 years of relevant experience (5 years if you have a postgraduate degree) and can demonstrate advanced responsibilities for delivering specialist areas of work. You have enhanced your skills as a recognised authority.

                     Academic Assessment– You have undertaken academic activities relevant to the profession over a three-year period and hold a surveying-related degree. You are teaching or researching at a university.
